Title: SEVEN SECRET ALPHABETS.
Description: Jonathan Cape. London. 1972. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. (10 x 7.4 inches). 64pp. Illustrated with 182 illustrations, printed in various colours, by Earnshaw, a master of surrealism. Full black cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine and front board. Fine copy in the red and black printed dustwrapper which is near fine save for some fading to the red on the spine. The rare hard cover of this important work. The book was issued in hard and soft cover with this variant being by far the hardest to find. A remarkable book full of Earnshaw's surreal, humorous and dark illustrations. A contemporary review of the book from the Times educational Supplement perhaps sums it up best; "It is fair to say that the author explores a landscape which suggests Magritte and Monty Python. The humour is austere, bleak and if not black, at least charcoal grey. As a feat of imagination the work is outstanding.".
