Title: THE DOG BENEATH THE SKIN or WHERE IS FRANCIS? - a play in three acts.
Description: London / Boston, Faber & Faber, 1986. Reprint of the 1968 edition. Paperback, 19,5cmx12,5cm, Good condition /Cover illustrated, First pulished in 1935. This high-spirited satirical play in verse and prose was the first in the theatrical collaborations of Auden and Isherwood in the thirties. Written for the Group Theatre. Despite its hilarious plot about a missing heir, Sir francis Crewe, Bt, disguised in a dog-skin, the play had a didactic aim and it contains, especially in the chorus, some of Auden's most memorable and effective poetry of the period. Wystan Hugh Auden (1907 - 1973), who published as W. H. Auden, was an Anglo-American poet. His play 'The Dog Beneath the Skin' (1935), written in collaboration with Isherwood, was similarly a quasi-Marxist updating of Gilbert and Sullivan in which the general idea of social transformation was more prominent than any specific political action or structure. Christopher William Bradshaw Isherwood (1904 - 1986) was an English novelist.180 pag.
