'Brasses and Brass Rubbing' is a comprehensive work, specially designed to help anyone who wishes to explore this fascinating craftsmanship of the past. Monumental church brasses reveal so many aspects of history, art, social manners, costumes, trades and heraldry that they form an indispensable part of all such studies. The rubbings obtained from them are also works of art and of decorative value in ther own right. The author writes of the procedures and technical methods for obtaining these rubbings, and of the immense knowledge to be gained from them, in the most simple and direct yet comprehensive terms, and sets out the results of her own practical experience. Among the many illustrations is a sequence of photographs of the author demonstrating the techniques of brass rubbings. A feature of the book is a list of all the figure brasses in churches throughout the British Isles. Brass rubbing was originally a largely British enthusiasm for reproducing onto paper monumental brasses - commemorative brass plaques found in churches, usually originally on the floor, from between the 13th and 16th centuries. The concept of recording textures of things is more generally called making a rubbing. What distinguishes rubbings from frottage is that rubbings are meant to reproduce the form of something being transferred, whereas frottage just desires to use rubbing to grab a random texture. 104 pag.
