It outlines the background to the scorched earth policy which involved British troops in removing families from their farms, burning of the farms, the destruction or confiscation of livestock, and even the deliberate destruction of fruit trees and crops, all to deny any possible sustenance to Boer commandos. Women and children were herded to the British concentration camps and this provides a detailed picture of life in them. The trauma of the camps and the lingering bitterness felt by generations after the Anglo-Boer war led to a serious alienation among English & Afrikaans South Africans that still lingers. Contributions by various specialist authors Elria Wessels, Paul Zietsman. J.S. Mohlamme, Stowell V. Kessler, J. Dreyer, J.C. Loock, S.B. Spies, Elizabeth van Heyningen, Andrew J. McLeod, Johan Hatting, and Albert Grundlingh.
