Hendrik Cloete (1725-1799) was responsible for the development of the Groot Constantia estate and its tradition of fine wines. This collection of letters were written to his friend Hendrik Swellengrebel in Holland from 1788 in an attempt to obtain the concession from the Dutch East India Company to freely trade and market his famous wines. Giving a close look at contemporary politics and economics of the Cape at that time, they also reveal much about the daily life and work of the winemakers of Groot and Klein Constantia in the late 18thC: Hendrik Cloete, Johannes Nicolaas Colijn and their slaves
