Burger, Acting State President of the South African Republic, ended the Peace Negotiations at Vereeniging on May 31 1902, ending an era in South African history. Later that same night, the representatives of the two Boer republics that fought Britain in 1899 met in Pretoria to formally accept the British peace proposals.
