George Champion was one of a party dispatched by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (in 1834?) to start a mission near Port Natal, the party arriving in Cape Town on 6th February 1835. They were instructed to keep a daily journal for submission to the Board. Delayed by act of war they only arrived in Port Natal on 21st December 1835. Champion's diary starts on this date. Dingane was never a trustworthy person and his attitude to the missionaries changed almost daily. Champion's diary is a valuable personal insight into Dingane's despotic rule.
