ISBN: 0620064102 Based upon Sir Roy Welensky's private papers this describes the brief but significant life of the Federation. Southern Rhodesia was slow to abandon racial practices and the British Colonial Office was determined to advance rapidly to independence all of its colonies on the basis of universal adult suffrage. Always hostile to the Federation, African nationalism flowered in the post-Suez climate. The inevitable result was Macmillan's concessions to Nyasaland and Northern Rhodesia. In the aftermath of the fall of the Federation the Southern Rhodesians were inexorably driven to the Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1995.
