ISBN: 0869201441 This gives a detailed account of his 29 days of negotiation with Lobengula which led to the Rudd Concession in 1888. This was the basis of the British South Africa Company's Royal Charter and the founding of Rhodesia in 1890. He remained at the Royal Kraal for over a year and conveys a vivid impression of life among the Matabele. There is a chapter on Rhodes, and also important testimony on the Jameson Raid. He recounts his earlier experiences during the 1878 Gcaleka Rebellion. He was also involved with early diamond mining in Kimberley.
