ISBN: 0869201328 Fleeing dreary low-paid work as a clerk in London, Cooper-Chadwick came to South Africa as a volunteer with the 1884 Warren Expedition sent against the Boers of Stellaland & Goshen. The smaller first section covers the years 1884-1888 which the author spent in various pursuits, commercial and military, in South Africa. Initially he was admitted to Methuen's Horse, and then later joined Carrington's Bechuanaland Border Policemen. Turning to the commercial world to better make his fortune. He became in turn prospector, miner, building speculator, and surveyor Completely unsuccessful in all his ventures, he had no trade or profession, he and two partners managed to persuade a group of Johannesburg citizens to finance a concession-seeking expedition to Bulawayo but this did not provide any greater success. The greater part of the work deals with his years in Matabeleland. He describes their customs and the character of the King, their feasts and ceremonies, and the competitive maneuverings of the rival white supplicants. His gives one of the best accounts of the tensions at Bulawayo and Umvutchwas in the winter of 1890 when at that stage the Pioneer Column entered Mashonaland. He ended his African sojourn tragically and conclusively when he lost both hands in a shooting accident. He returned to Ireland and wrote this book with a pen tied to his right arm.
