Description: Cape Provincial Museum, Albany Museum, Grahamstown, Natural History. Volume 19. Part 5. 28th May 1995. Stapled wraps, p225-p304. illustrated. 184mm wide x 240mm high. New unread copy. A black carbonaceous shale, exposed in road cuttings that intersected rocks of the Witpoort Formation (Witteberg Group) in the Eastern Cape Province South Africa, has yielded a variety of fossil remains that have added considerably to our knowledge of Late Devonian life in Southern Africa. The rocks are interpreted as having been deposited in a coastal setting with the black shale representing a stagnant back-barrier lagoon. Among the life forms present are charophyte and possible phaeophyte algae and a diverse arrary of plant types including members of the Rhyniopsida, Zosterophyllopsida, Lycopsida and Progymnospermopsida. Arthropods are represented by the remains of Ostracoda, Conchostraca, and Euryperteridae; fish by antiarch and arthrodire placoderms, acanthodians, chondrichthyans, crossepterygians and dip;noans. Several trace fossil types also noted.
