Mermithid and microsporidial parasites found in simuliid larvae were monitored in the Vaal River near Warrenton. Predators and their feeding behaviour on all life cycle stages. Several species of vertebrates and invertebrates were recorded as simuliid predators for the first time. Opportunistic and specialist predatory behaviour was observed. An assessment is made of the role these various predator species in limiting the population size of Simulium chutteri Lewis, a bloodsucking livestock pest in the region. Observations made subsequently in and along other river systems have revealed further instances of predation on larval and adult stages of the Simuliidae.
