Description: Cape Provincial Museum, Albany Museum, Grahamstown, Natural History. Volume 14. Part 6. 15th November 1982. Stapled wraps, p139-p149. illustrated, 184mm wide x 240mm high. New unread copy. Some aspects of the ethology of three Southern African species of Isodontia, I. simoni, I. pelopoeiformis, and I. stanleyi are described. Particular attention is paid to: the situation and nature of the nest; the nature of the materials introduced into it and the manner of their arrangements; provisioning; oviposition. With respect to I. pelopoeiformis, the most common species, accounts are given also of the life history, sequence of sexes in the nests, cannibalism and parasites. Certain aspects of 14 Isodontia species are briefly reviewed. I. simoni is shown to differ from the other species in that the pre-existing cavity chosen for nesting is situated in horizontal ground and not in vertical banks, in plants, or in other situations above ground level. On the basis of the situation of its nest and the nature of the materials introduced into it, I. simoni is considered to be primitive, a conclusion which agrees with that reached by other authors from a consideration of structural characters.
