Author: Gess, F.W., Gess, S.K., & Weaving, A.J.S. Title: Annals of the Cape Provincial Museums. Volume 14. Part 5. Some Aspects of Ethology of Chalybion (Hemichalybion) Spinolae (Lepeletier) (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae: Sphecinae) in the Eastern Cape Provincial of South Africa.
Description: Cape Provincial Museum, Albany Museum, Grahamstown, Natural History. Volume 14. Part 5. 29th October 1982. Stapled wraps, p139-p149. illustrated, 184mm wide x 240mm high. New unread copy. Some aspects of the ethology of Chalybion (Hemichalybion) spinolae (Lepeletier) are described, particular attention being paid to the situation and nature of the nest, the mode of its construction, provisioning, and sealing. Published accounts concerning the nesting of species of Hemichalybion are briefly reviewed. Data attributed to certain species, including H. spinolae, are shown to be misleading due to confusion by some authors of species of Hemichalibion with those of Sceliphron. The nesting of Hemichalybion (as exempified by that of H. spinolae here described) is discussed with reference to that of Sceliphronini as a whole. Possible specific interactions between three spider-hunting Sceliphronini nesting at Hilton are touched upon as is resource partitioning with respect to their prey.
