Percy Fitzpatrick (of 'Jock Of The Bushveld' fame), said in his private records, "There was a secret and a fascination in the mysterious 'craters' that appealed to the adventurous. The rugged ironstone throats, choked with treacherous black mud or with blue and yellow clays, whence came the ooze and the hot mineral springs and the faint smell of sulphur, might lead anywhere and mean anything".
