Due to the attractive colours of mature males, Nothobranchius, endemic to Africa, are popular aquarium species in many parts of the world. Amongst aquarists they are generally known as 'killifishes' or 'annual fishes'. The term 'annual' is used since it was originally thought that these fishes completed their entire life cycle within the course of a single year.
