Title: Historic Tableaux on Tiles / Historiese Tablo's Op Teels.
Description: South African Airways. nd. (1970). Bound in gilt on dark blue skivertex boards with original card wraps bound in. 26pp large folio (350mm wide x 500mm high). No inscription. bookplate. 4 square corners, minor bump to lower spine hence VG+ condition, prints absolutely unmarked. An excellent example of this relatively scarce item. 14 beautiful ceramic tile tableaux featuring Boer War battles and Boer Generals were discovered beneath the wallpaper of the old Victoria Theatre in Amsterdam in 1969. These were typically 1.5m wide x 2.3m high. The scenes had been painted by Cornelius de Bruyn. Dr Punt of the Simon van der Stel Foundation secured the tiles for South Africa. Exhibited in Pretoria in 1970 they were acquired by P.W. Botha who was then Minister of Defence and are now housed in the Boer War Museum in Bloemfontein. Features scenes of Ladysmith, Modder Rivier, Stormberg, Magersfontein, Colenso, Spionskop, Paardeberg, Reddersburg, and portraits of Louis Botha, Dr H.J. Goster, General De Villebois Mareuil, & General Kock.
