One Hundred and Fifty-Five Illegal Votes Having Been Thrown Out by the Inspectors at the Polls & by the County Canvassing Board Because Not in Compliance with the MANDATORY Provision of a SPECIAL Statute of the State, Regulating Suffrage in that District: Can the State Canvassing Board Legally Exercise JUDICIAL Power by Setting Aside the Statute for the Purpose of Counting in a Defeated Candidate?". It is well known that Governor Robinson was in favor of giving Senator Robertson his seat instead of Mr. Lathers...This has been taken as further evidence of his feeling against Tammany. The Governor, however is very bitter against members of the old Canal Ring, and when he took sides against Lathers he evidently did not know that, had it not been for the canal contractors Belden and Denison, of Syracuse, Mr. Robertson would not have come within several hundred votes of an election. Those Canal Ring contractors have a contract on the Reservoirs in Putnam County and marched their men all up to the polls with Robertson tickets..."].
