First edition: Shakespeare scholar and writer, Mary Cowden Clarke (1809-1898) was educated at home, though it was frequented by artists and poets. Mary Lamb taught her Latin. Early in her career, Clarke collaborated with fellow writers Mary Howitt and Anne Maria Hall. Clarke and her husband's literary circle included John Keats, Leigh Hunt, and Charles and Mary Lamb. - Feminist Companion p. 213. Contemporary full crushed morocco, sides with highly-embellished gilt frames, spine with gilt title and gilt-decorated compartments. Gilt-embellished turn-ins. All edges gilt. Vibrant endpapers in blue and gold. "Illustrated with seventeen engravings on steel, from original designs by Charles Staal" with tissue guards. Heavy-stock paper. Hinges expertly reinforced by long fiber method, crown and binding somewhat scuffed, page fore-edge with smudge, limited pale foxing. Attractively bound and illustrated first edition. Very good .
