Louisa Stuart Costello (1799-1870) was an accomplished Anglo-Irish artist and prolific, critically acclaimed and professional poet and author. Introduction and chapter about Persian ornament followed by descriptive passages and translations of "all the most important Persian poets by various translators." These works by Persian poets include the first English-language appearance of Omar Khayyam's quatrains, preceding Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat by 14 years. DNB XII. Elfick and Harris 73. Beautifully rebacked blue morocco spine with four raised bands; rich gilt decorations to spine and to paper-covered boards. Top edge gilt; fore and lower edges untrimmed. 12 title and section illuminated pages and 4 tipped-in color plates from paintings by Frederick Gardner with captions and tissue guards. Decorated headpieces and tailpieces. Marbled endpapers. Printed on Japanese vellum. About 30 pages unopened. Back of front free endpaper with small owner label, front fly-leaf with blind owner stamp. Clear archival protection. Boards with slight spring, corners slightly bruised. Well-preserved and luxuriously decorated first thus. Near fine with no dust jacket .
