Brilliant Irish dramatist and wit, Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was gay so convicted of gross indecency and given the maximum sentence of two years' hard labor. Wilde was declared bankrupt while in prison. The following year he published The Ballad of Reading Gaol by C.3.3. to refer to prison cell 3 on the third landing of gallery C. Mason, Bibliography of Poems of Wilde 407-427. Elegantly signed by Vassos on half-title. One-quarter black cloth over blue-gray laid paper sides. Fore and bottom deckle edges. Frontispiece plus fifteen full-page art deco halftone lithographs captioned on facing page and blank on reverse by Vassos. Matte black and blue art deco dust jacket lettered and decorated in gilt from front to back by Vassos. Tight and clean binding. Pages toned with trace foxing. Jacket price-clipped with minor edgewear, gilt on jacket front subtly faded. Tight first trade edition illustrated by Vassos in attractive dust jacket. Signed by Illustrator. Very good+/very good+.
