The above work was based on his essay on ‘The history of the Neath valley’ that won a £100 prize at the 1918 National Eisteddfod. This was published in 1925 as the above. The fruit of many years research, collecting together documents and traditions of all kinds relating to the life of the community, it was reprinted in 1994. From the library of Sir (Henry) Clifford Darby (1909–1992), geographer, of upper Neath valley, Glamorgan, south Wales. ODNB ‘... a towering figure in British geography for sixty years in the mid-twentieth century and was in the first rank of scholars in the country ...’ With his underlining throughout.
