The idea behind the event was to build relations between England & France following the Treaty of London in 1518. Called the 'Le Camp de Drap d'Or' in French, the affair was a lavish recreation of a Medieval Chivalric Tournament. No expense was spared & henry had a huge canvas castlt erected. For all the diplomacy & Renaissance show its purpose was thwarted when later in the same year England forged an alliance with Philip of Castile The Holy Roman Emperor who then declared war on France.
