Hardback with dustjacket. ¶ An early reprint ( colophon states 'finito di stampare il 16 ottobre 1961' ) of the first edition in Russian of Pasternak's seminal novel of the Russian revolution. Unable to find a publisher in Russia the manuscript was smuggled out of the Soviet Union to the Italian publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, who had it translated into & published in Italian in 1957. The novel was then sent to the press in 1958 in Russian. Pasternak duly won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958.
