Half calf over marbled boards, VG. ht+tp+222pp, Ex Libris Mr Alexander Carte with his early bookplate, leather rubbed & worn along the spine with a small split at the head, pages generally lightly foxed & yellowed throughout, but a nice copy none the less. Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ Two papers, the first comprising detailed case studies of tumors, in an attempt at classification based upon their anatomical structure, from patients which Abernethy had treated at St Bartholomew's Hospital. The second on Chronic lumbar abscesses. John Abernethy [ 1764 - 1831 ] surgeon & medical practitioner, who spent much of his career at St Bart's as a surgeon & lecturer. His lectures were popular 'in large part due to the robust humour and extravagant histrionics which he brought to the classroom'. [ODNB]. He authored several papers of 'Surgical Observations', and was inclined to attribute every ailment to a disorder of the digestive system.
