Full contemporary speckled calf, VG. ht+tp+[xii]+270pp, mardled endpapers, engraved frontis ( dated 1781 & engraved by De Launay ) all edges gilt, with the half title, small chip to the leather at the head & tail of the spine with larger chips to the upper L & bottom R of the rear panel, small crack in the leather at the top of the lower hinge, spine with attractive gilt acorn & floral motif, boards triple lined in gilt, despite the wear an attractive copy. Small 12mo edition. Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ A later edition of Thomson's blank verse poem the Seasons, which he wrote between 1726 - 1730. The poems reflect, amongst other things Thomson's ideal of a universe ordered through divine harmony & reason. James Thomson [ 1700 - 1748 ] Scottish poet who ironically wrote the words for one of the most patriotic of English Songs, Rule Britannia.
