Description: William Pickering, 1830, 1st edition thus. Full morocco, G+. lxxii(2)+150pp, 8vo, engraved frontis, aldine anchor & dolphin to the title, all edges gilt, gilt lyre motif to the boards & scrolling pattern in gilt to the spine, gilt dentelles, leather rubbed along the edges particularly at the hinges, frontis a little foxed & offset to the title, internally a nice copy. Ex Libris Henry Baker Tristram with his Armorial bookplate on the pastedown. Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ First Aldine Edition, printed for Pickering by Charles Whittingham at Tooks Court. It was with the Aldine Poets series that 'Pickering's style reached its perfection of simplicity' [McLean]. William Collins [ 1721 - 1759 ] influential English poet who ranks almost as highly as Thomas Gray, although the popularity of his lyrical odes was only realised after Collins' death. Ironically his early death partly hastened by depression at his lack of success. Rev Henry Baker Tristram [ 1822 - 1906 ], Biblical scholar who spent much of his life in the Holy Land & wrote several books on the area.
