Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ Third edition of a well recvieved history of the Portuguese revolution of 1640 by the French historian & monk Abbé René Aubert de Vertot [ 1655 - 1735 ] which was originally published in 1689 under the title 'Histoire de la Conjuration de Portugal'. The book was praised as much for the language in which it was written as for its historical merit. On publication Madame de Sévigné wrote 'Nous avons lu, avec mon fils, la Conjuration de Portugal , qui est fort belle'.
