The letters sent by Mann ( which are not in these volumes ) have in the past been described as 'dry & devoid of interest'. Wheras that sent by Walpole to Mann, ensconsed as he was at the Tuscan Court, are full of news and anecdote of England. Indeed it has been said that even if, of all Walpole's copious correspondence, only that sent to Mann had survived, his reputation as a man of letters would have been secured. These volumes contain 360 of Walpole's letters to Mann.
