Title: Songs For The People
Description: Houlston & Wright, 1867, 2nd edition. Decorated cloth gilt, G+. xii+274pp, coloured engraved title, letterpress title, bevelled boards, gilt decoration on the upper cover shows three scenes - a girl crying? seated on a rock, a girl playing a lute, and a wonam attending her baby. LACKS front endpaper, gilt decoration dulled & a little worn, one gather a little loose, a good copy of an scarce imprint of an uncommon book. Binders ticket of Burn & Co Kirby St on the pastedown. This edition not in the BL. Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ The author was Vicar of Bramshaw. He wrote several collections of poems between 1857 & 1869. He was the son of Henry Brodrick of Mauritius & was educated at Exeter College Oxford. This collection received a warm notice in the Westminster Review - 'there is almost a Tennysonian wealth of colour and yet perfectly distinct from Tennyson's peculiar touch - such a sample as this will surely, we trust, send many readers to Mr Brodrick'. The poems are highly moral & deeply religious.
