Original Cloth, 2 volumes, G+. xvi+428pp, iv+427pp, one quarter of the bottom of page 137/138 missing with manuscript replacement in a neat 19th century hand, text spotted, cloth has a small along spine of volume 1 , a good set. Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ The author was a wel travelled Quaker [ 1754 - 1836 ] who travelled extensively as a missionary. Volume one details his travels around England and Ireland, where asa Temperance Minister he visits drinking houses. In Yorkshire he visits the houses of 'machine breakers' in Huddersfield & the widows of executed rioters. He delivers a speech to the Prince Regent on the matter. Then he sets out for Germany & Denmark. Volume 2 details his travels to Germany, where he preached to the inmates at Spandau Prison, Denmark, where he met the King & Crown Prince, then on to Petersburg where he stayed for the Russian winter, witnessing the great floods of 1824. He then, in 1825 set off for the USA, travelling to New York, on to Canada. Returning to America he is involved in the anti Slavery debate & Hicksite riots.
