Green cloth-covered boards, gilt titles to spine, 8 pages of plates (photographs of fossils), 311 pages including Index. The first seven chapters discuss the geology of coal generally (formation and origin, fossils as zonal indices, stratigraphy) and some general problems of mining; the remaining sixteen cover British coalfields in more detail, with one chapter to each area, and including sketch maps, a summary of the stratigraphy of the coalfields and the type and quantity of coal to be found. Excellent photographs of fossils. Condition: Front board worn, and bumped, wear at joints. Library label and withdrawal label to front paste down, library stamp here and there, shelf mark to spine. Pages clean, plates in very good condition. External top edges of text block soiled. Good.
