Description: Rochester, Edwin Harris and sons, 1903, First Edition. Hardback, Dustjacket: No Jacket. Size: 8vo. Quarter leather, red pebble-finish cloth-covered boards with gilt decoration and titles, darker red leather to spine strip, also with gilt titles. Marbled end papers, red-deckled page edges, illustrations. Richard Watts was a prominent citizen of Rochester in the time of Elizabeth I, and funded an almshouse for "six poor travellers who, not being rogues or proctors, may receive gratis for one night lodging, entertainment and fourpence each". It is unclear what a Proctor was in this context or what Richard Watts had against such people (or indeed what entertainment he had in mind). Condition: Boards a little knocked, spine strip unaccountably trimmed at the top, with the loss of 2 or 3 mm, otherwise sound and clean. Overall, a very nice copy. Very Good.
