Charles- Louis Clerisseau (1721-1820) was a French architectural draughtsman, antiquary and artist. He had a role in the genesis of neoclassical architecture during the second half of the 18th century. Catherine the Great was a patron of Clérisseau. The drawings and studies exhibited at the Hermitage depict ruins in Italy, architectural fantasies, and arabesque interior designs. The largest cache of Clérisseau drawings by far is in the collection at the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. Bibliography.
