Title: A Descriptive Catalogue of a Collection of Pictures, Selected from the Roman, Florentine, Lombard, Venetian, Neapolitan, Flemish, French and Spanish Schools to Which Are Added, Remarks on the Principal Painters and Their Works .
Description: E& C Dilly, 1769. Hardcover. 173p. The original Edition of Strange's work. Strange was a Scottish Artist and Engraver and a supporter of the Jacobite cause. He published a portrait of the Young Pretender at the time of the 1745 rebellion. He was at the battles of Prestonpans and Falkirk Muir in the Young Pretender's lifeguards; and was in hiding for some months after the Battle of Culloden. Just before Culloden while with the army at Inverness, he engraved a copper plate to print bank-notes of the planned Stuart government. This is now in the West Highland Museum, Fort William. He later regained his acceptance and was knighted by George III. He went to Italy in 1760 and this is the catalogue of the paintings he acquired there. The book has been finely rebound by Bovill with new marbled boards, new sympathetic endpapers and a leather spine with raised bands and gilt titling. No marks or signatures but some old worming (max.10mm) on top right hand corner pages vii and to p.3 . A tiny pinhole then extends through to p.164 where the track extends to 20 mm from p.167 to 171p. Otherwise, clean, tight and in very collectable or presentable condition. See scans and email for more. . Very Good +
