Description: Privately Published, 1901. Hardcover. 122p 4 (of 5) plates. A record of Alasdair Murray's short life as an officer in the Boer War. Arriving in South Africa in late March 1900, he died of wounds on Jun 3rd, received during the skirmish at Senekal - the Battle of Biddulphsberga - a few days earlier. His letters home to family and friends are printed followed by press reports and many letters received by the family which give much detail about the battle and its aftermath from different perspectives. The book was published privately in 1901. Alasdair's letters are written from the Steamship Dunera, Dewetsdorp,Tabanchu, Ladybrand, Lovedale Andrewsfontein and Trommel with mention of Lindley, Biddulphsberg, Harrismith Hammonia and Senekal. Condition fair only - Boards are marked and text is well thumbed but tight. Frontispiece is missing and has been crudely removed damaging the foretitle. Facsimile of frontis supplied. 4 other plates intact and include Crossing a drift,Bivouac of No.6 Company, Grenadier Guards and On the March.Signed by author on fep and previous owners stamp on prelims. Apparently a rare work - the South African Military Society's detialed description of the battle does not include this book in its list of references. See scans. . Fair
