Author: Wizowaty, Suzi, Title: The Round Barn.
Description: Hanover, NH, Univ Press of NE, (2002). 1st prntg. VG Hardback in G DJ edge wear. "An accomplished first novel, set in Vermont according to a publisher's press release from the University of New England. which includes an interview with with the author about a repeatedly vandalized round barn which had been meticulously refurbished now being relocated to northern Vermont by its owner, a musician. Round barns are extremely rare with only three in the state of Vermont, the largest built in 1901. The first round barn was built in 1824 by the Shakers in Massachusetts. It was viewed with suspicion as a matter of religious experimention rather than sound farming practice. The idea only caught on in Wisconsin in 1896 where they were cheaper to build and operate and represented the height of technology were it not for the invention of the tractor which revolutionaized agriculture. This barn consisted of three levels and 16 pie-shaped sections for structural strength. The top floor with its top is a lightning rod. The top floor served as a haymow, the dairy floor could contain 60 cows with a circular feed trough. The round Barn is an extremely well-crafted first novel with a well-braided story line told with a variety of voices and stories.
