He was then at the height of his fame after On the Road, The Subterraneans, and The Dharma Bums. He looked tired and was drinkiing heavily na dhe appeared to be on a binge and deetermined to party on. Hw nwcwe lacked company. His celebrity drew company. Thsee was dicerse and sundry talk about politics and politicians, intricate rimes, talk of wars and panics, food, drink, clothes, beds, flowers, talk of women, relatives, home towns, travel, foreign cities, talk about movies and movie stars, about sors and champions of sport, gossip of th eliterary life, ghot stories, fables, riddles, jokes, talk of grammar, of origins, about what' real and what isn't and plain swap talk. We were with Jack most of he tiem. Went to the First Zen Institute for an evening service. By Lew Welch:We started for New York in my old jeep f or no reason.
