It features the author's fictional alter-ego , Jack Duluoz, who repreeswnts a younger Kerouac and make appearances in subsequent novels including Big Sur, The Vanity of Duluoz and Visions of cody. It takes place in Kerouac's hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts. In the text, Kerouac mixes his childhood memories with his youthful fantasies. The central fanasy centers on the mythical Great World Snake, a villainous, slumbering creature who is predicted to decour the whole world upon its awakening.
