The Peabody-Fitch Farm (now known as "Narramissic") where narrator Fitch grew up is a historic site owned and operated. by the Bridgton (Maine) Historical Society. The house has been restored, largely with original family items, to reflect its appearance as Edwin knew it just before he went off to fight in the Civil War. Also restored is the barn and workshop (with a functioning blacksmith forge) that Edwin's father George Fitch built, and is developing the property as a working farm. Also walking trails are being developed so visitors can see nearby natural and historic spots, including the right-of-way for the old narrow-gauge railroad line that once linked Bridgton to the outside world.
