His experiences as an. anti-aircraft gunnery officer aboard a cruiser in the Aleutians and an anti-aircraft carrier in the South Pacific revealed to him the stress and emotions of men at sea under harsh weather and combat conditions, so at war's end he turned to writiing about it. Dibner was appointed the first executive director of the California Arts Co mmissin in 1964 and founding director of the Joan Whitney Payson Gallery of Art in 1972.
