Ingersoll was a Democrat. until the attack on Fort Sumter and a Republican ever after. In 1860 he was nominated for Congress but was defeated because of a strong agnostic speech he gave. In 1862 he went to war as a colonel of the 11th Illinois calvalry, was taken prisoner but was exchanged and in 1867 be became attorney general of Illinois. Among his famous speeches was one at the burial of his brother and the Decoration Day oration in NY in 1882. Rough paper cover.
