Sketches of Joseph Astarita who was a civilian when captured on Wake, are based on his experiences as a prisoner of war for 44. months in prison camp in hand numbing winters without heat, the stench of Chinese summers, and constant hunger. He hid the sketches in two empty Red Cross shaving cream tubes where they eluded searches by Japanese. Wake was the scene of the first sinking of major Japanese ships by U.S. Naval forces. The war's first large surrender of military and civilian personnel. Wake and Guam were the scenes of the first Marine Corps defeats since the October 1846 battle near Compton, California.
