Paris to study and eventually secured a place in the Commissariat where he served as an officer in Napoleon's armies in Italy where he was a member of the French Ministry of War under Napoleon for 8 years and took part in 40 casmpaigns including the retreat from Moscow. In 1814 with the fall of Napoleon he retired to Milan, returning in 1821 to Paris where his first major work, On Love, was published in 1922. In 1831 he was appointed consul as Civita-Vecchia. He wrote biographies of Haydn and Rossini, a history of Italian painting, and The Red and Black in 1830. Tanning to edge of binding.
