Title: A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains.
Description: Norman, OK, Univ of Oklahoma Press, (1988). 15th ptg. VG PB. Women were scarce in the West in the late 19th century, let alone a middle-aged English lady traveling alone by horseback. Bird made an extended tour of the Rocky Mountains area of Colorado, when she was on her way back to England from the Sandwich Islands. She climbed Longs Peak, then traveled through Estes Park, the mining areas, on down boulder Canyon to Longmont, through the Big Thompson and S. Vrain canyons, and then on to Denver. Wearing Hawaiian dress and mounted on Birdie, he borrowed pony, she was guided by desperado Mountain Jim. In its simple and disarmng style, is is a great piece of reporting on a rugged frontier, delightful letters by an English spinster, a jewel case of keen perception, social analysis and masterful description for this era.
