In 1785 the District of Maine at the time this town was chartered, contained about 75,000 inhabitants but was fast. increasing. The first town meeting was held May 3. In January 1788 a Convention of delegates was held in Boston, to act on the U.S. Constitution, which was submitted for ratification or rejection. The Convention gave a majority of 19 votes in its favor and in April that town voted for governor for the first time. Library markings.
