Southey was born August 12th, 1774, and through both his parents was born from respectable families of Somerset County, England. He was raised by his mother's maiden aunt who was such a cleanliness fanatic that she once buried a cup someone she considered unclean had used that she buried it for six weeks. She had a great passions for theaters and actors, and great actors of the Bristol stage often visited her. By the time Southey was eight, he had read through Shakespeare, Beaumont, and Fletcher.
