Title: Mountain Measures: a collection of West Virginia recipes.
Description: Charleston, WV, Jr League, (1994). 10th ptg. VG spiral bound. From the Appalachian region of the U.S., a harvest of kitchen tested recipes with a theme of the pioneer woman. The early. pioneers came across the rugged mountains of western Virginia or through the long valleys from Pennsylvia on foot or horseback, by wagon, or boat. First they cleared the land and planted the garden: corn, beans, squash, cabbage, pumpkins, melons, cucumbers, sweet potatoes and turnips. After provisions for a supply of food, the settlers built sturdy log houses with big fireplaces around which centered many family activities. Utensils included heavy iron pots hanging on a crane, a Dutch oven set int the coals for baking, skillets for frying, a carved wood mortar and pestle for pounding corn into meal, and a vriety of baskets, gourds, and earthenware vessels made from native clay. There were no recipes then.
