Bernstein was born in 1918 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to Russian immigrant parents, majored in music at Harvard, and wrote his honors thesis on how American music reflects the ethnic backgrounds of its composers and continued his studies at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In the summer he studied at the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Tanglewood Music Center.
