At the age of 4 her family moved to Long Island where they lived in a red brick house under several sweetgum trees and close to beaches and woods. She spent summers pickng cherries, chasing butterflies, enjoying flowers, and shell collecting. Winters were for dog sledding. As a child Margaret had a large collection of animals. At one time she had 36 rabbits, 2 squirrels, a collie, 2 Peruvian guinea pigs, a Belgian hare, 7 fish, and a wild robin which returned for visits each spring. She wrote and illustrated well over 100 books when she died in Nice, France in 1952.
